MADE’s first creative project – SNOWGLOBEs by Alex Flach & Yoske Nishiumi

MADE, the creative platform in the Haus des Reisens at Alexanderplatz, is the stage for the first collaboration between Berlin photographer Alex Flach and Tokyo designer Yoske Nishiumi. There the two creative artists present their cultural backgrounds and sources of inspiration from their home cities in two oversized walk-in “snowglobes”. Avoiding famous landmarks like the Brandenburg Gate and the Tokyo Tower, the duo concentrate instead on unique features of each city that cannot be found in guidebooks.

Inside the two snowglobes Nishiumu and Flach faithfully reproduce these extraordinary capital cities in miniature format. On entering them viewers gain an intimate insight into the artists’ worlds and become part of these unique environments. They stand in the centre of the city and can gaze beyond the transparent walls at the elaborately decorated world outside where the two artists have presented more of their home metropoles’ idiosyncrasies. Flach and Nishiumi build on the effect created by these three-dimensional installations by playing on viewers’ visual and auditory senses. They use sounds typical of their home cities and distinctive lighting to support the unusual impression already created.

Alex Flach was born and raised in Berlin and has experienced the rapid changes that have taken place in this alluring city first-hand. The 36-year-old has been working with the street-art magazine Lodown since its very first issue, work that has also included the release of two books. In 2008, in cooperation with Drago books, he produced his first solo effort Berlin Calling. After solo exhibitions in Copenhagen and Berlin’s Pool Gallery, he opened his own showroom called Civilist in Berlin’s Mitte district in 2009.
“Yoske and I were immediately impressed by MADE. For me as an artist, it is really exciting to be breaking out of my comfort zone – photography – and trying out something new. MADE provided us with ideal conditions for realising the vision we had for our project.”

Yoske Nishiumi was born and raised in Toyko and has been living in Berlin for around 10 years. Back in 2002 he launched KOI KLUB, a creative platform that promotes collaboration between designers to create art works inspired by the forms and colours of Japanese fish. The 43-year-old has been designing exclusive limited editions for trainer brands Asics and Onitsuka Tiger since 2003 and used this as a vehicle for taking his concept to Amsterdam and Tokyo three years later. In 2008 Nishiumi exhibited his work in the “Berlin im Licht” exhibition and at the DMY design festival in Berlin. A year later he opened the temporary shop “Kiosk by KOI KLUB” and in 2010 another called “Spätkauf by KOI KLUB”. “To my mind, MADE has been an exceptional project from the very beginning. The entire group supported and inspired us the whole time we were developing the snowglobes idea,” says Nishiumi. “The space MADE offers is unique and has continually provided us with new inspiration for our work”.
